P. J. 맥그린치 신부 제주지역 사회사목활동의 교육적 의미

Abstract

인간의 삶은 정규교육 안에서만 이루어지는 것이 아닌 사회와 연결된 삶을 살고 있기 때문에 지식 및 기술의 성장이 아닌 인간의 삶의 성장을 바라보아야 한다. 이러한 삶의 성장과정으로서의 교육에 대한 관심은 최근 '웰빙(Well-being)'과 '힐링(Healing)' 등 삶의 질 향상의 바람을 타며 이전에 비해 매우 높아지고 있다. 특히 'Glocalization'이라는 개념의 등장으로 지역사회의 중요성이 부각되고, 가르치고 배우는 학교교육 패러다임에서 주체적 학습 중심의 평생학습 패러다임으로의 변화는 삶의 상호관계를 맺는 가장 기초 단위인 지역사회에서 삶의 성장과정과 연결된 지역사회 평생학습의 실천 당위성을 부여하고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 삶의 성장과정으로서의 교육을 기반으로 한 지역사회 발전을 이룬 사례가 있다. 바로 '파란 눈의 신부', '돼지 신부'로 알려진 맥그린치 신부의 인간존엄성 실현을 위한 사회사목 활동이다. 하지만 지금까지 맥그린치 신부에 대한 연구는 지역사회발전을 이루어낸 결과적 측면에서의 연구는 있지만 지역사회 발전을 이루기 위한 기반 혹은 과정으로서의 교육과 관련한 연구는 전무한 실정이다. 이에 맥그린치 신부의 제주지역 사회사목 활동에서 교육적 의미를 찾고자 문헌분석 위주의 사례연구를 수행하였다. 세부내용으로 맥그린치 신부의 사회사목 활동의 계기는 인간존엄성 실현을 위한 사랑의 실천이며 사회사목 활동의 내용은 지역사회조직, 지역사회개발, 지역사회복지, 인간성회복으로 구분지어 살펴볼 수 있었다. 이후 사회사목 활동의 다양한 활동 안에서 맥그린치 신부의 교육활동을 살펴보았다. 그는 실천적 의식개선 활동 및 직업교육 등의 현실적 삶과 연결된 교육활동과 다양한 인적‧물적 교육환경을 제공하였다. 또한 교육활동을 지원하기 위해 4H클럽 및 이시돌협회를 조직하여 교육활동을 촉진하였다. 이러한 교육활동을 바탕으로 맥그린치 신부가 실천한 교육활동의 특성을 네 가지로 살펴보았는데 첫째 주체적 시민으로 성장 추구, 둘째 지역사회 역량증진을 통한 종합적 발전, 셋째 교육지원을 위한 조직화, 넷째 사랑의 실천을 통한 인간존엄성 실현이다. 그리고 정민승(2002)의 교육자의 역할모델을 토대로 교육자로서의 맥그린치 신부를 조명하였다. 마지막으로 지금까지의 내용을 종합하여 지역사회 발전을 위한 교육활동의 모델을 도출할 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 지역사회교육이 지역사회개발의 필수요소이며, 지역사회복지확대와 같이 지역사회발전을 위한 토대가 된다는 이론적 논의를 하나의 실천적 사례로 확인하는 계기가 되었다. 또한 오늘날 다양한 곳에서 시행되는 지역사회발전을 위한 평생학습도시 및 각종 마을만들기 사업에 필요한 실천적 지침을 제공한다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 크다. 따라서 이후에도 맥그린치 신부의 사회사목 활동에 대한 지속적인 후속연구와 더불어 본 연구에서 도출된 모델을 지역사회에 적용하기 위한 연구가 필요하다.

Since human growth is not only realized by regular education but also in the life linked to society, it is necessary to consider growth of human beings, not that of knowledge or technology. In such a course of growth in life, education is recently attracting significantly greater attention than before due to the efforts to improve the quality of life, which involves well-being and healing. In particular, as the concept of glocalization has appeared, the importance of community is emphasized; the shift from the paradigm of school education based on teaching and learning to that of lifelong learning based on independent learning makes it necessary to implement community-based lifelong learning connected with the course of growth in life in a community, which is the most fundamental unit of interrelationships in life. In this context, there is a case of community development based on education as a course of growth in life: the social and pastoral activities to realize human dignity by the Reverend Mcglinchey known as 'Father with blue eyes' or as 'Father Pig.' While the research on the Rev. Mcglinchey has been conducted in terms of the results of his efforts to develop the community, there is no study on his efforts related to education as the foundation or process to realize community development. In this respect, a case study was conducted on the basis of literature review to determine educational meanings of his social and pastoral activities in Jeju. Specifically, his social and pastoral activities aimed to live up to love to realize human dignity and the contents of the activities could be divided into community organization, community development, community welfare, and humanity restoration. Then, his educational activities were reviewed within a diversity of social and pastoral activities. He provided educational activities connected with real life, including the activities to improve practical consciousness and vocational education, and various personal and physical education conditions. He also organized the 4H club and the Isidore Association to promote educational activities. On the basis of these educational activities, the characteristics of the educational activities by the Rev. Mcglinchey were divided into four types: first, pursuit of growth into an independent citizen; second, comprehensive development through enhancement of community capacity; third, organization for educational support; fourth, realization of human dignity by living up to love. On the basis of Jeong's (2002) role model for educators, light was shedded on the Rev. Mcglinchey as an educator. Lastly, the results were put together to make a model of educational activities for community development. This study has given a practical case of the theoretical discussion that community education is essential to community development and may become the foundation for community development, such as spread of community welfare. It is very significant in that it has provided practical guidelines necessary for the current projects of creating lifelong learning cities and other villages in pursuit of community development in various regions. It is therefore necessary to conduct further research continuously on the social and pastoral activities by the Rev. Mcglinchey as well as studies aiming to apply the model in this study to communities.
